Openings

I am starting a new group at the University of Cambridge in January 2027, working on robotics and intelligent systems. I am looking for people who want to work at the point where robot learning, control theory, and real robot hardware meet.

Where the group is going, and the work it builds on, is described on the Research page.

PhD students

I expect to take on PhD students starting in October 2027, admitted through the Department of Engineering applying through the Information Engineering track. Strong backgrounds in any of control theory, reinforcement learning, computer vision, dynamics, or robot systems engineering are a good fit.

Funding routes include departmental studentships, Cambridge Trust scholarships, and external fellowships. I am glad to support strong candidates through these applications.

Student projects

I welcome Master’s thesis students, Part IIB and MPhil project students, and visiting students. The positions below are open now. The brief (PDF) describes the research areas, how projects work and how to apply.

Beyond these areas, I am also glad to discuss projects on morphing flight, multi-modal planning, learning-based control and soft aerial systems. Visiting researchers are welcome too. Apply as described under Getting in touch.

Postdocs

I am happy to discuss fellowship applications — Marie Skłodowska-Curie, Royal Society, EPSRC, and college research fellowships among them — with researchers whose interests overlap with the group.

Getting in touch

Email me with your CV, your transcript, and a short paragraph on your research interests. Please put “PhD 2027” or “Student project” in the subject line: imm38@cam.ac.uk.
